Week 7 Story: How the Wolf Killed the Elephant

How the Wolf Killed the Elephant

Once upon a time, in a jungle long ago there lived many animals that all got along peacefully, for the most part. The Elephant believed it was the most amazing animal to ever exist and the elephants required that everyday every animal had to bring them something to pay their respects, they most often were brought food.
One day, the wolf was out basking in the sun near the lake and he was so content with himself that he decided he did not need to go and give the elephants an offering. The wolf continued to lie there until all the sudden he felt a large shadow come over him. When he looked up he saw the king elephant standing over him.
"Do you think you are better than us?" asked the elephant.
"No sir, I do not," replied the wolf.
The wolf knew he had to come up with a story to explain why he did not bring an offering today.
"You better have a good explanation or you will be dead, wolf!"
"I was sitting here by the lake and a mysterious creature came to and told me that he was going to kill you and all of the other elephants and so I have been too scared to move"
"Where is this creature you speak of? No creature on this earth is better than me or stronger than me"
"I shall show you, he was in the middle of the lake, follow me," instructed the wolf.
The elephant was so determined to find this creature who had claimed to kill him that he had totally forgotten he cannot swim. Once he got to a place he could not reach the bottom, he sunk and died.
From this day on the elephant was no longer the supreme animal in the jungle.

Author's Note: I started out my story by using the idea from "How the Rabbit Killed the Lion." I really liked this story and how it used trickery but not on purpose. In the other story they use a rabbit and a lion and every animal is supposed to go and bow to the lion everyday and the rabbit decided not to because he was so comfortable. When he was approached he made up an elaborate story about someone who wanted to kill the lion, just like the wolf did to the elephant. In the end the superior animal dies because they drowned looking for the creature that did not exist.

  1. Hi Paige,
I like how you change the characters from the original story while keeping the general idea of the story intact. A lot of stories, like the original story that you based this one on, use a lion as the ruler of the animals, but I think the elephant works just as well, since it is so large and powerful.

  2. I really enjoyed reading this story. Stories that have animals in them are always fun to read. Being able to imagine how different animals would interact with one another is really interesting. Wow I wasn’t expecting the elephant to die at the end! It is kind of sad, but it seems as if the elephant was too focused on being King. The wolf tricked him and the elephant paid the price.

  3. Hi Paige,

Your story was a nice one. It honestly reminded me a little bit of the recent film adaptation of "The Jungle Book". I'm not sure if you've seen it, but in that movie, the elephants were regarded by everyone else as the superior animals, and were not to be messed with. I do like the way you adapted the moral of humility into this story though, it's a nice touch.

  4. Hey Paige. I really like your story because it showed how the wolf had thought of himself and thought he was better then the elephant. It was a simple story but it shows how sometimes you might think too highly of yourself and will get yourself in trouble. The overall message of your story was good and I like the way you changed up the animals from the original story as well.

  5. Hi Paige! You did a great job with this story and I really enjoyed reading it! I haven't read the original, so I am not sure what aspects of the elephants character was your own creation, but I you did a good job of conveying the self-importance and obnoxiousness of the elephant. I thought it was ironic that the elephant asked, "Do you think you are better than us?" when clearly, he thinks he is better than everyone. Although I am generally not a fan of death or violence it seemed just that the elephant died at the end. I can't imagine that living under his rule was a very good time for anyone.
