Week 5 Story: How the Turtle Got It's Shell

This story is now in my portfolio.

How the Turtle Got It's Shell

Once upon a time, in a forest filled with all of the animals, there lived a small colony of turtles. These turtles lived a happy and peaceful life, for the most part. The turtles were kind and there were few animals in the forest who did not like the turtles. But, there was one animal that the turtles did not like, the bear. The bears in the forest thought the turtles were the best snack in all of the forest, so the turtles were constantly in fear of being eaten by a bear.

One day the turtles had had enough, they no longer wanted to live in fear and they were determined to whatever it took to save themselves. The leader of the turtle colony decided that he had no other option than to go and visit the forest god.

"Please Forest God, I need your help, all of my family and friends are being eaten" pleaded the turtle.

The Forest God was known for helping when she was asked, but every wish she granted came with a price.

"How may I help you?" replied the Forest God.

"The bears are eating us all and I am begging you to help us" cried the turtle.

"I think I know a solution" replied the Forest God, "But if I am to give you this wish, you must pay the price for such a wish."

"We will do anything to stop this" ensured the turtle.

The Forest God looked at the turtle and granted him and all the turtles across the land a protecting shell for them to live in. The Forest God handed the turtle and sack of food that each turtle was supposed to have a bite of in order for them to grow their shells. The turtle now had a hard surface on his back, making it impossible for him to be a yummy snack. The turtle was amazed at what the Forest God had done for him and he could not wait to return to his other turtles and share the amazing news. But, when he went to run back to his colony to give them all their shells he could barely move. The turtle was so confused and was trying with all of his might to run, but he couldn't.

"What have you done to me?" cried the turtle.
"This is the price you must pay" replied the Forest God, "You will no longer be delicious or something the bears want to eat but you now will be the slowest animal in the forest."

The turtle began his journey home, he arrived there two days later than normal. All the turtles at their food and grew their shell but they all became the slowest animals in the forest.

"At least we are alive" said the leader of the turtles.

Author's Note: I was really inspired by the stories telling the fates of the animals lives and why they are the way they are today. I took those stories and put my own twist on them, I chose turtles for no particular reason and wanted to explain how they got their shells and why they are so slow. I liked these stories because they are humorous and very creative.

  1. I'm sitting here trying to imagine not only what a turtle would look like without a shell, but also what it would look like moving quickly! That would be quite a sight. When the leader turtle arrived back at the colony two days later, I was almost expecting for the bear to have come and wiped out the rest of the turtles. I'm really glad that didn't happen! Any idea why the bear singled out the turtles specifically? I enjoyed the story, nice job!

  2. Hi Paige! I really enjoyed your story! This is such a creative twist on the story and you really made it your own. It’s exciting to read a new, creative story, plus it’s one that I had not ever imagined reading before. I agree with Sam’s comment above mine—I definitely thought that the bears had eaten all of the turtles while the Forest God was granting them new protection from the bears. Thank you!

  3. Hi Paige! I loved reading your adaption of How the Tiger Got His strength! I thought that it was super creative of you to explore how animals came to be the way they are now. I liked how you included a lot of dialogue between the different characters. I think you did a great job on this story!

  4. Hi Paige! I hadn't heard this story before, and the thought of a turtle that was both shell-less and fast kinda weirded me out. But I like how you introduced the story! You do a good job of making the readers feel the struggle of the turtles as well as their fear of being eaten. I also like how you make it clear that gifts often have more than just benefit and can require a give and take. There is one little thing you might want to change. In your title, you've used the wrong "it's." The title should be "How the Turtle Got Its Shell." Overall, very good work!

  5. Hi, Paige! I really enjoyed reading your story! I have not read the original version, but after reading your version as well as the authors note, I think I have a pretty good idea as to what the original version is about! It is hard for me to imagine a turtle that does not have his shell and is also fast, but I think you did a great job with your writing style and also giving your story a lot of good content. Overall, I think you did a great job with this story!
